Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street is a story written by an American classic Herman Melvill.

It is a small philosophical masterpiece by great Melvill.

In the grotesque manner Melvill showed the relationship between a society and calm Bartleby, an American "little man". The main themes of this work are power and will. They have a philosophical meaning as well. The passive state of Bartleby is expressed by a Schopenhauer's formula (one of the philosophers respected by Melvill) of resignation (full submission to the fate, resigned humility, and giving up any activities).

But in order to deny something, one should at least have it?
