1911 malte der Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner die "Schlafende Milli" nackt auf einer Couch liegend. Als Inspirationsquelle ließ er nur die eigene Erotik gelten. Während zahlreiche Kunsthistoriker_innen neben der Ästhetik auch die Sexualfantasien von Kirchner in den Fokus ihrer Analysen nehmen, taucht die Autorin in die Gedanken- und Gefühlswelt seiner "Muse" ein und lässt "Milli" sinnbildlich erwachen. In Einzelinterviews kommen acht Schwarze Kunstschaffende verschiedener Generationen zu Wort und erzählen, wie sie in und durch ihren Arbeiten die gängigen kolonialtradierten Stereotype überwunden und ihre eigene selbstbestimmte Identität als Schwarze Frauen innerhalb der weißen deutschen Mehrheitsgesellschaft gebildet haben.

In 1911, the expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted "Sleeping Milli" naked on a couch. The only source of inspiration, which he allowed to apply, was his own sense of eroticism. While numerous art historians take the aesthetics as well as the sexual fantasies of Kirchner into the focus of their analyzes, the author immerses herself into the thoughts and feelings of his "muse" and awakens "Milli" symbolically. In individual interviews, eight Black artists of various generations speak about how they have overcome common colonial stereotypes in and through their work and how they have formed their own self-determined identity as Black women within the white German majority society.
